Chapter 1:

“Maddy, get up! You're going to be late!” Mom yelled from the kitchen “You have a big day ahead of you!”

Right I forgot, THE MEET! This might be the most important day of my life! I jumped out of bed with a spring in my step and crashed right into the closet door. Did I leave it open? I must have, I have no idea why but…

As if reading my thoughts mom yelled up the stairs “oh, sorry I opened your closet door to get out your meet leotard so you wouldn't forget it”

“What’s for breakfast?” I yelled down the stairs, “Not dry cereal again is it?”

       Mom laughed, “No, its oatmeal.”

“Thank god!” I yelled laughing, and ran down stairs.

“Do your hair, do your homework, brush your teeth,” My brother Jackson recited. He was two and right now his big thing was imitating people, especially mom.

“That’s right shortstop,” I said, ruffling his hair, “Do you know what day it is?”

“Maddy’s big gymnastic thing” he answered, “in big city”

“Thats right” mom said, “so what can’t she forget?”

      “Her tutu”

 “No her leotard…”

I had completely zoned out of their conversation and zoomed into my own world, plus it had nothing to do with me. My thoughts were on gymnastics, especially where I struggled the most: BARS.  I could imagine myself doing the routine perfectly in my head but it just didn't seem to happen that way for real. My coach said imagining yourself doing things it will help you in your routine, but it doesn't help me, nothing, none, nada. My friend Maia’s strengths laid where mine didn't bars and beam. Okay, I was okay at beam but still it wasn't…

“Maddy are you listening to me?” Mom asked, “I asked you a question”

“Sorry Mom, what was the question?”

She sighed, but answered anyway, “I asked if you think your team will get into finals today or not? And why aren't you eating your oatmeal?”

“Sorry got distracted” I said, gulping down the oatmeal not even tasting it “i’ll get on my leotard, meet you guys in the car”

   “Don’t forget your gym bag!”

“I won’t” I yelled running up the stairs, with my mouth full of oatmeal and half a banana in my hand “Meet you guys in the car!”

“Alright, see you in 2 minutes”

      “Okay!”

As I ran up the stairs to my room something struck me, why wasn't dad in the kitchen too? I went to check his room, and saw a lump on the bed.

“Dad get up, we’re leaving in 2 minutes for my meet” I said, a head popped up but the head did not belong to dad, “Jasper, bad dog, off the bed.”

“Maddy, hurry up, its been 5 minutes!”

“Sorry Mom, got distracted-again” I said, but before I could say more I heard the front door slam shut behind her. I ran to my room put on my leotard, grabbed my gym bag and ran downstairs. Mom honked at me from the driveway, then rolled down the window.

“We’re going to be late!” she yelled through the rolled down window

“We’re going to be late” Jackson repeated, in his best mom voice, “Hurry up!”

I stifled a laugh as mom scolded Jackson for copying her, “Where’s dad?” I asked “Is he coming?”

“He’s already there waiting, now hurry up and get into the car already,” she replied matter-of-factly

      “Already, why?”

“Its a surprise!” Jackson replied, again imitating mom, and again doing it perfectly.

“Just get in the car!” Mom yelled.
