Be Still

Be Still

A Poem by Y. Counts

We believe we are only these bodies.

But they bleed or are already broken.

We need the bad news to realize

that we were safe once.

Is it too much to ask

to Be Here Now?

A simple task

that gets flooded with many thoughts.

Can it really be that easy?

Everything has been stripped away

that once held our attention.

Now we stand simple on the earth,

just wind and rain to disturb us

in our soft sleep,

and shining leaves to distract our eyes

from the setting sun.

Will I fall through so many cracks,

or can I learn to be still?

The stillness seeps in from every corner

and sets up home all around me.

Can I let it touch me, or

will I fill this air with

the sounds of nothing,

so as not to hear

the song of silence?
