Devil dancer

Devil dancer

A Story by Yazeed abusummaqa

I smelled the most alluring smell steaming out of her living room. “I cooked something special for us today,” Delilah’s voice announced excitedly across the hall. I followed my nose to her living room to find a delicious collection of shrimp, fries, pizza and a huge deck of roasted meat. I positioned myself between Jesse and Dalilah who exchanged each other with hateful glares. Opposite from me stood Joey who held his fork clutched tightly in his fist. He shoveled spoonfuls into his mouth. Occasionally he would talk about his days at school, but today his only focus was his plate.

Awkwardness enlightened the room while Jesse and Dalilah continued to manifest signs of complete hatred. With a look of disgust, Jesse poked the meat repeatedly. “Is this even meat?” He scrunched his face.
“I see that your rudeness has still not left you,” Delilah snarled. Jesse rolled his eyes, and I stood there frightened but relieved that Joey didn’t get a glimpse notice of his parents’ new relationship. Dalilah gnashed her food furiously.

“I can’t wait to go home into the arms of Massie,” Jesse smirked “at least I found a woman who knows how to cook.” The more words vomited out of Jesse’s mouth, the more Delilah’s face heated up with jealousy. Crack! Delilah’s plate suddenly broke. “She won’t even last long, as you tend to have a habit of losing woman!!”
Joey suddenly turned his attention towards his parents, but then shrugged his shoulders and continued eating. He lifted the plate to his mouth and scooped all his leftover bits in. “What makes you think she won’t last long?” Jesse’s voice thundered. Delilah began to smile with an evil glint in her eyes. “She’s already gone Jesse,” Delilah snickered. I dislocated my seat from Delilah, and moved closer to Jesse who’s face held a detestable frown. Ever since the divorce, Delilah’s happiness and calmness evaded her. Almost as if her soul was replaced by a demon. She stood from her chair and moved slowly to Jesse.

“I know she’s gone because you’re eating her,” Delilah whispered loudly and laughed like an assailant. “You’ve always wanted to be close to her right? Even when we were married. Now here you are, eating the woman who you kissed behind my back for years. ” Pieces of meat flew out of Jesse’s mouth and he grabbed Delilah’s neck intensely. Delilah gasped for air, and right before my eyes was the day I witnessed my best friend’s death. Jesse felt no remorse for what he did, but Joey was too caught up in his food to even notice his mom’s death. Day after day, Joey would ask what happened to his mom, but his daddy would say that she went away with her true love. He said that she will never come back because she can’t leave her husband, and if you ask me, I know what he meant when he said her husband. He meant the DEVIL DANCER
