I Want 2 Color

I Want 2 Color

A Poem by Yvette Shaw
"

I read a poem today where an author apologized for being repetitive. She didn't have to, it's what made the poem work. I have a 4 year old, and I constantly repeat myself, it's what we do to make a point. I didn't realize that he did it also. This is just

"

Look at that sign mom, I see an L. Turn

that way, I want to ride a rocket. Look,

a stop sign. It’s red. I want to color.

Not that way mom, turn left. But we live

to the right. Oh ya, turn right then. I

want to color.

Look at that sign, it says stop. Stop mom.

Stop. The wheels on the bus…sing mom

sing. I want to color.

Look it’s blue. I see a number 3,

Look at that motor cycle. Go that way

mom. Why, what’s that way?

Us.

Do you smell something like popcorn mom?

It smells good, I want some chicken. I want

to color.

Are you hungry baby? No I ate already.

When? that other time. What did you eat?

food. I want to color.

What do you want for dinner? Breakfast.

Are you hungry? No I’m Ross.

I want a soda, you can have water. O.k. but I

need a soda, You can have water. O.k. How

about juice? You can have water. O.k mom, I

need water, and I want to color.

Look mom the red ranger is in my room.

Where? He’s on the bed. Oh, hi red ranger.

Mom he left already. I want to color.

Fine, go ahead and color. Mom? Yes Ross?

I need a pen…

Gotta admit, this is one of the reasons I love kids. At the very least, they're entertaining. This is definitely from the mind of a four year old. I couldn't help but think about all my nieces and nephews through the years and recall how at times they could be simultaneously cute and irritating. They can't help it though. Like you said, they're only expressing themselves. Good write and fun read.

I love this... I love how you capture your sons words and write them down... how you embrace his imagination... the innocence... the connection... the love between you is palpable and so beautiful... hold it tight ;)

this is so cute. i got emotional, to read something so innocent but says so much at the same time. it's obvious your love is astounding and your son feels that love. he is a happy little sprite that let's his little heart speak all the time because his imagination and lively spirit is condoned

I liked this very much! Kids are the best...their perspective on the "important things" in life really makes you think sometimes...about what really IS important! Great write! You sound like a very patient and loving mom. Ross is a lucky guy! Of course, you sound very lucky to have Ross, too.
