Falling

Falling

A Poem by Debbie Paliagas

Some of us were meant to be

admired from afar,

like celestial bodies;

brilliant sometimes, even dazzling,

yet untouched by warmth-

solitary showpieces

that amuse and delight the masses

in a magical display.

With oohs and ahhs, they point

and speak their praise

in hushed tones,

as if their words could break

the spell, and we'd fall

from grace.

Sometimes I revel in the notion

that I am special, chosen

to cast a glow that lights

a part of the world.

Praise is a powerful drug.

It's thrilling and intoxicating,

and for a thousand fleeting moments,

I can forget isolation's bitter frost.

To all who call me friend,

incandescent, I smile,

while I alone can hear

my soul's final shriek

as it tumbles

into the chasm.

I was browsing through New Writing, failing to be drawn in or really impressed enough by anything, and then I came upon this.

'Some of us were meant to be
admired from afar' - This first line caught my attention. I'm not sure why. it just did.

The idea of a cold loneliness prevails in this first stanza, despite the great dazzling descriptions. I really like the first stanza... a lot!

Another thing I liked about this poem was the subtle rhymes which are just enough to give the piece a rhythm without seeming contrived.

Very well written!
