"Taking Off The Costume"

"Taking Off The Costume"

A Poem by Zoe Anne

“Taking Off The Costume”

When I wear this costume,

It’s like another layer of perfume.

It covers up the first scent,

And its original intent.

I felt so constricted,

All of my happiness was restricted.

But then when I met you,

I talked to you,

You talked to me,

There wasn’t much to see.

But we started to know each other,

We realized we wanted to be together.

Parts of my costume started coming off everyday,

My face was caked with clay.

My eyes bled fake blood,

My skin covered in mud.

I was the creature from the Black Lagoon,

But then my horrific scales shed,

Now, I’m the mermaid from the blue waters in June.

I was ugly Bloody Mary crucifying everything alive or dead.

Now I’m the angelic Queen,

The most beautiful one that you have ever seen.

Everyday that I see you,

I feel so brand new.

Because I’m with you I can sing with such grace,

And I don’t need a costume to hide my true face.
