Savages

Savages

A Poem by Zorrin86

If there's enough meat to go around

Then there's no reason for us to be savages,

Of course some of us here are vegetarians

And this is why we no longer need lawn mowers,

What we don't eat we can always save for later

But either way the bones will be given to the dead,

As recompense for our unwholesome way of life

This is why the bees swarm around us like honey,

This is also why our horses are bereft of oats

Now I can tell from your vacant, ominous look

That things went south a long time ago

Just shortly after our nameless friend

Was devoured by the hungry wolves

That live on their terms, by the honor system, in a word,

But if words fail you, then put your ear to the ground

And listen to the heart beat of nature:

Thump...thump...thump

A remarkable cadence even for unclean souls,

For what dignity we had was spent on the war effort

With the bear cult savages from across the ravine,

It was on that day that I found myself walking on eggshells

To the sound of some shrill, hostile flute,

Carrying me onward to victory, then defeat, and then finally

The madhouse, just beyond the graves of the fallen
