You

You

A Poem by Julia Kim

A dangerous moment passed, where I almost forgot my ties
and you your social barriers. We returned from a place
where realities were billowing clouds, far afloat,
and facts were merely unnoticed whispers.

When we began to return from that fuzzy place,
words, laced with honesty and warmth
filled our quiet minds. The truth began leaking out;
a trickle, then a stream, a rushing flood,
from both of us.

Finally,
acknowledgment from both sides,
in a place where realities, sharper than crashing waves,
harder than years old cement, reintroduced themselves.

But I could no longer allow for reluctance,
nor you for convention.

We unmangled each creased thought,
the way we would reveal our oldest favorite shirts,
oft worn and well treasured.
Pressing down and unwrinkling every detail,
comfortable, making neat folds, hiding away
our words into each other.

Realizing how well our perceptions of the world corresponded,
how easily our past experiences allowed us to understand the other,
how undeniably attracted we couldn't help but feel,
I wanted to keep you, by my side.

And with your hand resting firmly on my waist
my arm squeezing you closer
eyes, amused and gentle, trading glances with mine,
we began tracing back our steps.

Back to where this singular, unique experience had begun.
Back to where we had been innocent, or at least, feigning ignorance.
