Penny

Penny

A Poem by Aaron Jinks

If a nickel were to fall, one would possibly retrieve it,
for it has decent worth.
If a dime were to fall, one would most likely retrieve it,
for it has good worth.
If a quarter were to fall, it would be retrieved,
for it has great worth.
But what if a penny falls?

Most would not retrieve it, for it has almost no worth in the eyes of many.
However, many times, a penny can hold great worth.
It can be the last cent needed to enjoy the savory sweetness
of an ice cream cone on a hot summer day.
It can be the start of a plan for something better, such as coins saved in a jar,
to keep a hope remaining that all starts with a single penny.
Maybe you're a penny,
lost in the shadow of the quarters and dimes of the world.

But don't feel worthless, and don't ever pay focus
to the false proof of your unimportance, because
while it seems you may not be important to any life,
as a penny,
you have great potential,
like a penny.
The underdog, the unsung hero, the unknown spirit that
harbors greatness, these are things pennies, and only pennies,
can be.
So don't lack belief in yourself penny, don't falter in who you are,
for you have a worth far greater than you know.
