Last words

A Poem by Basmakyah Borz

In time, they will release the video
containing my last words.

I will smile, but you will not see
the joy and mirth radiating from my face
as I know the hour of my departure
draws ever nearer.

Look to the West Bank, to Raqqah,
to Fallujah, to Tehran, to Kabul,
to any of the cities I left pieces of my heart
for answers concerning my last seconds
with believers, with my family here in this world.
Look there for my reasons of why I did
the things I did.

- - - - - -

I look to leave as he left,
with a love and a life so much greater
than any open-air prison could ever hold.

God takes all the bad emotions out of us
when we get to Heaven (if we get there)
so we won't be mad if we see someone
we didn't like when we were alive.

So I'm looking forward to it, to seeing him.
I'll forget the damage done, the irreversible harm,
the pain, the brokenness, and the grudge -
and I'm going to run into his arms like he never hurt me.
