Commuting in Rural America

Commuting in Rural America

A Poem by Annette Lemma

A herd of cows passed me today
traveling north on Oysterdale Road.
They stayed in their lane and
followed their guide light on the
farmer's truck.
As I stared in admiration,
I came to a stop.
Passive, with ears tagged
their hoofs clodded by.
Their tails brushed against my minivan.
Massive beasts gently collapsing my
rear view mirror.
I wonder what they thought of me.
In my shiny white metal box
I felt like an intruder -
A commuter
disturbing the
Serenity
of rural America.

Certainly captured the essence of rural america I think. There is a quality here that I remember from my times before I came to the big city. This reminds me why I never wanted to leave. So much simpler.
