Big Floppy Baseball Hat

Big Floppy Baseball Hat

A Poem by Annette Lemma
"

inspired by 13 year old Aaron

"

Finally the sun has set behind the trees
Behind the home bleachers.
That kid's fast ball has some competition
Blazing heat cannot scorch the June scents of
Honeysuckle mixed with Infield dust
Sounds of birds and Baseball banter
"GET BAAAAACK!!!!!"
That's my kid giving me another heart attack.
He's the fast skinny one
Easy to identify
The only one who makes the sign of the cross
Before each At Bat.
"Batter UP!" Father, Son, Holy Spirit
Drowning out the local parents behind me
Reminiscing about Cruising High Street and
Mrs. Smith's Pies
Did you know that some guys spent 34 years
Working in the freezer?
A sentence Or a ticket to Heaven?
And they served the Best Cheese Steaks at
C&T where the guy would hold the top of the bun
Under his arm while making the sandwich.
Where Is That Sun?
My excuse to wear this big floppy hat
I'm keeping it on anyway
Not becuse I'm hiding or I'm
Above the locals who wonder where the time has gone.
I don't believe in reminiscing anymore
Or Cheese Steaks.
Memories are being made right here, right now.
These kids need me to be present for them
And mine just made a Terriffic play in Center Field.
I'm happy being his mom under the weird sun hat
Writing a poem.
