I Held His Breath

I Held His Breath

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

war memory

"

I Held His Breath

I held his breath in my hands

the dead hero strewn in a silk coffin land

please take your breath back and be at ease.

he laid at attention his eyes fixed in dead

he wanted no breath for he was eternal

I laid down beside him and covered us all

asking him again for a breath from my hand

Still he remained like a soldier standing his ground

his smile once alive undid by war

The red stripes are colored with blood of the war

I decided to lay with him that night

and live him always so he could be alive.

The war poems are always hard on me causing each and every time some form of tears, upset or both.

Thank you both for your encouraging words and support.

Regards,
Al

I could see both soldiers lying there, really great work.

so poignant and profound...beautiful words and vivid images of laying with the fallen to ensure perpetual life...I need to sit for a minute to experience the depth of feelings garnered by your words, my friend...thanks for sharing
