If Only a Boy

If Only a Boy

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

MP is military police. My first deep impression of Vietnam.

"

If Only a Boy

If Only a Boy could see me now
standing in dazed wonderment
a child no doubt, bound, arms, hands
behind his back standing thinned boned
like a stick next to the muscular MP.

Where would he be in his own wonderland
Swimming the waves of the South China Sea?
Catching his girl on a long run down into the
heart of his teenage dream
Or kicking that ball high into the air
watching it float as it streams through the sky

But no, the boy doesn't see me now,
His arms bounded by dogma of the domino affair,
Ho stabbed in the back in the politics of the bullshit
The lessons of fools resides in dead boys
and children of people called enemy's sin
live a daily nightmare of old men at age 14.

this is fantastic....what visions of war and what it does to youth...all involved lose their innocence....their golden teen years...as soldiers, as innocent casualties...

your last line is telling..."old men at age 14"

a nightmare for sure.
