As My Friend Lay Dying

As My Friend Lay Dying

A Poem by Alfred Kukitz
"

the boyhood hours have passed

"

As My Friend Lay Dying

My thoughts sway into the eternity of time
One huge man, whose face I witnessed in youth,
now lays dying.
Memories entwined with our present love,
Smiles from ancient days among a universe yet to be born,
I kneel in my pain
Surrender my whims and fantasies for a different age,
I cast sorrow's eyes to the fatal tale of the day.

I love the way you use so few words, yet you manage to convey so much detail about your friend, about the situation, about the way it feels. Watching the slow process of dying is extremely difficult & you've shown it with simple honesty.

Thanks Jacob!

We gathered back in 1995 for a similar tale. Joe died of cancer by the time it got really bad I just prayed God would take him. And so He did.

Al

i have lost boyhood friends, it is not only painful but a rude awakening to our mortality...and how this life is so short---every day has to count...and yet we are hopeful there is a universe after this...and one that will bring peace and comfort.
