Faith

Faith

A Poem by Amber S. Hays

The Devil was waiting for me when I got back home last night.
And God told me to close my eyes, but I kept on driving.
Jesus saved my life.
But so did my best friend.

I cried because I’m not strong, but I told a friend that she’s stronger than I’ll ever be.
Our stories are the same, and that’s the truth.
But she has some years to go.

I ate chicken when I got home, and almost fell asleep.
And as the traffic came to a halt, I lit another cigarette.
And then another after that.

The Devil won last night, but the whole time I was crying, I was begging for my feet to walk out of his shoes.
God told me to close my eyes, but I kept driving.

I learned that a weekend away from reality isn’t quite enough.
I know this was my last weekend away.
And I pray to God that I can drive straight into His arms.

Jesus saved my life.
But so did my best friend.
And the Devil was there when I got back home from God.
