For So Long

For So Long

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

For so long
These walls have stood
Brick by brick
They were built
To stand the most outrageous lies
The violent words
The backstabbing knives
The molding hands
For so long
The wings of freedom
Have been weighed
By ball and chain
Arms outstretched towards freedom
For so long
Criticizing eyes
And leering sneers
Have thrown punches from all sides
Never allowing ability to reach for the light above
Too many bruises and heartaches
Mental wounds adn torment
Unable to reach for the freedom of self
The freedom of knowing who you really are
For so long
Struggling to stand
And being kicked down
You want to give up
Let yourself be molded the way they want you
Then you see the light
And hear freedom calling once more
Struggle to stand and fight once more
You fight harder now
Because you realize you're reaching the end
The imprisoning balls are shatternig
The chains are snapping
The walls are tumbling down
The bruising punches
Have turned to caressing feathers
The criticizing eyes and leering sneers
Have turned to warm welcome and acceptance
Instead of shoving hands to injure
They are hands of help and guidance
For so long
You have wanted to be bathed in the light
And now you are
Wounds and bruises have healed
Hope and strength flow around you
Through you
Seeping into the pulse of you blood
For so long
You have wanted to open your eyes
And see acceptance
So now you do
Open your eyes and see a world that accepts you for you
For so long
You've dreams
And now you have a dream become reality
No more thoughts of
For so long
Now only thoughts of
For now
For always
For the future me
