A New Horizon + A New Beginning

A New Horizon + A New Beginning

A Poem by Nichole Cosgrove

I've been walking so long

My feet are aching and torn

My shoes worn out to shreds

My clothes ragged

All I want to do is lay down

And pass into oblivion

The cool, comforting hand of neverending darkness

I've been slumped over

For too many miles and years to count

My breathing felt ragged and harsh

My eyes drooping, itching, and lifeless

For reasons beyond my knowing

I kept going

For miles I didn't notice the breeze that had started

Playing softly across my skin

For miles I didn't notice

The mist being carried on the breeze

Cooling my heated skin

The first flower I saw

At the side of the unending road I walked

I didn't understand what it fully was

At the first hint of shade

From the tree on the side of the road

I blinked and looked up

Uncertain if I was seeing things clearly

Gazing, at first unseeing, down the road

I saw more shade and flowers

Not fully understanding

What was happening

Licking my dry lips

With an equally dry tongue

I somehow find the strength

To straighten my shoulders

Standing upright once more

That's when I hear it

That voice being carried on the breeze

Soft as a lovers caress

Your voice

Calling to me

Somehow I find myself walking faster

Wanting to get to the shade

The reprieve from life by myself

Every second I move faster

With more resolve

Every minute I get closer

Following the pull of your voice

Sensing that something is about to change

Finally i reach the sahde of the trees

And sigh in relief at the cool embrace

I dont stop though

As I hear your voice

Still calling

Making my way through the trees

I feel myself start to smile

The sounds, the smells, and the sights

Make my eyes water

At things I thought I had long forgotten

Still I move on

Hearing my name once more

Looking further down the path

I see what appears to be a meadow

Letting out a laughing cry

I start to jog, then run towards it

No longer feeling any pain from my feet or legs

I make it to the edge adn stumble a little

As my breath stops, seeing you there

A creek nearby sends out its splashing chime

The smell of dew kissed grass and flowers

Is an aphrodisian to my senses

As I draw closer

I feel my heart race

Reaching for you, I step into the fairy ring

Taking your hand, I know

This is the new horizon

And you

Are the new beginning
