Mother

Mother

A Poem by A. Stringfellow
"

A new mother reflecting on her own mother

"

Before I became a mother I thought I would understand my own a little more

Turns out, I understand her even less

I look at my own daughter and wish the world for her

I imagine her growing up strong and courageous, unafraid of the future

Did my mother wish that for me?

As I watch my daughter sleep, I am overcome by the love I have for her

Grateful and blessed beyond belief

Did my mother feel the same way about me?

Seeing my girl slowly grow into her own person, discovering her personality day by day

Since the day she was born she’s been so strong and fierce

How could a mother just abandon her daughter?

I would give my own life to save my sweet girl’s

Fight the toughest of battles so she doesn’t have to

Did my mother feel that way about me?

I will never be able to understand my mother, because I am not her

I am stronger, wiser, and better than she ever was

So thank you, Mother. You taught me more than you will ever know
