Message in a bottle

Message in a bottle

A Poem by Adelia Alighieri
"

I don't know what inspired me to write this thing. But there's always a desire in everyone's heart.

"

I’m standing here by the shore,

My feet slightly buried in the sand,

The sun set appears dull to me,

My eyes are searching the sea,

There’s no boat I am waiting for,

Since you’re not coming back too soon,

But because you promised me,

You’ll send me a letter,

By the sea,

I am standing here waiting for it,

There! I see it,

Lurking with the waves,

It’s coming to me,

I race farthest into the sea,

And reach out to grab it,

In minutes I could take hold of it,

And read how much you love me,

There, it’s coming as fast as the water itself,

As if Poseidon is bringing it forth himself,

‘Pandora!’

I look behind to answer the call,

I look back at the ocean within seconds,

It’s gone,

No more in my sight,

I search the entire horizon with my eyes,

But in vain,

Then I feel a touch on my toes,

I look to find a bottle,

Lying next to my feet,

I smile and bend to pick it up,

I pop open the cork,

Shove my fingers in to grab the paper,

Pull it out,

Unfold it,

To find that you’re not coming back,

Not at all,

Never,

So I fold back the paper,

Exactly the way it was before,

Squeeze it back in the bottle,

Put the cork intact,

And throw it back in the water,

With all my might,

So if it reaches you,

To see the paper untouched,

You understand,

That I never got your message,

And will be waiting,

So that in your heart,

Back at the farthest corner of it,

There always remains a desire,

To come back home,
Home, to me.

Amazing, Arwa. What makes this poem so touching is that I'm experiencing a near identical situation in life right now. And come what may, we'll never cease to believe! The language is slightly off in comparison to your other writes, but heck, when you write as good as this, I don't care! This is going into my favorites and also on my FB wall!

I guess everyone else have said what I'm supposed to say. Still, I feel this work reminds me of Gitanjali. Tagore always uses this kind of natural and common imagery. A sad love story told in fashion ;)

Keep writing.

ooo I love this - the story - the idea in it - the waiting - to wait for so long and then almost miss it - then once read deciding no you do not accept it - sending it back - untouched! can apply to many things - you wait for opportunities to arise - they may not often be as you wished - so you give them back and wait - or here the love - to show that you'll still be waiting - they will come back! nice!
