One Million

One Million

A Poem by Matt Ventimiglia

One million years

I followed the light

that has led me here

To the beginning

of another light

I contemplate

darkness

Dream

hills

blue-green

dancing

bitterweed

bathing

in the virgin glow

of a newly born sun

under which

a kingdom

of bees

reigned

for centuries

nurtured

by the replenishing

drops

of light

Which I watch

evaporate

before

my hands

cupped, desiccated

prey

for the darkness

brittle branches

hoping

for fleeting rays

that float

from the graves

of stars

one million years away....
