A Poem by AshleyDeyPoetry
"

The time a girl fainted and fell down a cliff in photography class.

"

The peaceful day is shattered by a yell

Almost too casual to be taken seriously

Just rowdy high schoolers

Glad to be outside for one period

Then, suddenly

A panic starts to set in

What start as quickened steps

Become a full out run

Hearts pounding

The group collectively holds their breath

“What happened?”

“Is she conscious?”

“Is she breathing?”

Questions fill the static air

Sirens blaring, coming closer

It’s the uncertainty

The not knowing that is the hardest part

Everyone is curious

Anxious

Onlookers slowly inch forward

Push their way in

Asking intrusive questions that we can’t answer

Leave, we think in unison

This is not your place

The ambulance arrives

Is she okay?

We are guided away before we can be sure

Waiting, pacing, tapping, shaking

Anything to offset the panic

Breathe, focus, relax, keep waiting

The bell rings and we are expected to carry on

Business as usual

Is she okay?

Walking down the hall

There are jokes, there is laughter

I want to scream

Blood boiling as I pass

Sick to my stomach

How can anyone be like this

Sit, breathe, wait

There is an announcement

She is okay
