A Forgotten Dream

A Forgotten Dream

A Poem by Recording life moments
"

Never give up your dreams...

"
An old man is sitting on the sand. He looks at
Kids who run around and play tag. They laugh and
Giggle. Their dark eyes sparkle like little diamonds; their wide smiles
Lighten up the cloudy day. The old man now
Seventy years old remembers when he was
A little boy himself. Back then he dreamt of sailing
The seas and conquering the oceans. His daydreams
Led him to the banks of Thames River, to golden
Coasts of the Mediterranean sea, to the
Tropical waters of Polynesian islands,
And the cold waters of Arctic sea. However,
As he grew up, he learned about storms, and sharks, and
Shipwrecks. An “And” list kept growing as years went by
Until he abandoned his dreams of sailing the
Azure oceans. Instead, he chose another path.
He runs his family’s restaurant business
And has never left the land. Fifty years have passed
Since then. He has four kids and settled down in his little
Town. “Kids, let’s go home!” the old man hears parents say.
He looks around and sees that it’s already noon.
‘How time passes quickly,’ he thinks as he looks back
At his life. Decades went by in the blink of an
Eye. Blink! The moment’s gone. The old man looks around
Once more as if he woke up from the dream, a long
Dream, indeed. He gets up slowly and brushes off
His sailing shorts. In his hand he holds the boat keys.
