A Poem by Lucy Allison
"

Our task was to write a poem based on what we remembered of 9/11 and 7/7- for me it was that a child's mind interprets what they hear very differently to an adult's, often without all the facts.

"
I remember it as August-time
when we went there.
They did not know I knew.

They looked at me with great confusion
as I refused to take those elevators
as I had done with ease on many
carefree days before.
My foot
would not take one step towards
the Underground station.

How could they not know I knew?
'Terrorist' meant nothing to me, nor
'fatalities', nor 'suicide',
but I had heard some news that the Underground
would make you die.
No exceptions.

It had been the same a few years back
my memories even hazier.
I just remembered mama saying
'they blew up America'

so how could they not realise
why I did not want to fly there?

That's very interesting, terrorist attacks from the view of a child. I think you accomplished your task very well. I don't remember hearing anything about 7/7 when I was little, but when I was 4 (when 9/11 happened), I guess the only thing I really wondered about was why my parents were so stressed out and why they were worried about my cousins in New York. I also worried about the collapsing building on TV, and if our house would collapse.

I love this poem. I had to write a similar one for class years ago. Thank you for sharing this!

I genuinely believed America had ceased to exist, the whole of it, and that the president was dead :/
