Mala Mujer

Mala Mujer

A Poem by Alexandra

My grandma drinks fireball
Like there’s overflow at the liquor store
I dance wild
When I hear Lavoe play
Brings me back to youth
When Orfelia held my hand and took me to the dance floor
“Grab your necklace...I will always be here”

My great grandmother was rigid and strong
She threw her husband over the balcony once
Walked and drove alone with no pressure from the times
She stood tall, although short stature

I dance for myself
Smile because I’m never alone
Orfelia, I didn’t throw him off the balcony
But, I might’ve caused trouble
I can hear her say:

“Mija, it’s all the same. You never need a man”
