Tombstones (9-6-85)

A Poem by PoetryofProvidence

We buried them all one by one
tombstone by tombstone as they come
from the time when we are young
dream by dream we watch them die
merciless against our cry
and watch as love has passed us by
We reach out futilely in the air
for a dream that isn't there
or a heart with which to share
To set ourselves free from sadness
is the striving of our madness
to escape this endless badness
for one touch a gentle caress
Someone who cares about happiness
We dream of more but are given less
I have come to know the madness of those insane
who live on dreams and forget their name
by this the anguish seek to tame
To escape each passing sorrow
seeking hope in each tomorrow
living on the time they borrow
depression buries each desire
on a burning funeral pyre
watching dreams go up in fire

too many for love have died
far too many for lack it have died
