Coffee and Cigarettes

Coffee and Cigarettes

A Story by Proclus

I want your honest answer

Not the tale you tell when it's hard to tell

if the way you've weighed

the situation is wrong

Not the deflection you use

to mask your perception and views

when it's just too hard to make the connection

between what's really going on

I want the story of you, Unabridged

Tell me how you choose to live

what you take, what you give

who you blame, who you forgive

The story of: What's so special about us?

Of why we're all in such a rush

to whisper our love and scream our lust

when our hearts demand we shout to the world

yet our sex takes place behind closed doors

What's your definition of rich?

Because often I've found the poorest men

are those who've found their personal zen

through money that entices

them to drown inside their vices

such a shame we keep subscribing

to this trend

How meaningful was your first date?

Was it love that killed it, or was it hate

and afterwards, with the hours late

alone in your bed, did you contemplate

the things you wished you could say

and how closely, to me, could you relate

when I say that for years, my shoulders ached

from carrying with me, that same weight

that I know you still hold to this day

How much of your time has been well spent?

I want to hear what you'd amend

The things you're proud of, the things you regret

for your sake, to get it off your chest

or if not for yours, to some extent

for mine, just to here you vent

over coffee and a cigarette.
