Cigarettes and Whiskey

Cigarettes and Whiskey

A Poem by Elizabeth

Cold and broken like the dead poet’s Hallelujah
a ledge I navigate
with precarious
 indecision

a funeral march that promises a cold and comforting grave

Love letters that are yellowed and torn

words and moments
that never were

echoing

in empty hallways

but tonight
the corner of a bar

cigarettes
whiskey

and stranger’s smile

ignite hope
again

unique lines that ring true

i love the metaphorical beginnings

and the bar, cigarettes and whiskey, smile, hope ending

In the lowest of places, we can be inspired by a stranger. "Love letters that are yellowed and torn." Nice.

Wow to read this I get images of someone like Hank Williams Sr... that old lonesome feeling rises through your words and those comforts we use to disguise those feelings.
