A Story by Blaire Beavers

The summer of 2010, my sister and I bugged my parents no stop: we wanted a puppy. We already had an 8 year old Golden Retriever but we got her when she was over a year old so we never had her as a puppy. One day my mom would be on board with the idea but no t my dad and the next day they’d switch roles. Eventually, the started giving in and looking at ads online and in the paper, making phone calls and such. My sister and I were so excited. From the start, we thought we wanted another girl Golden Retriever, just like our current dog and the one before her. My mom told us to keep an open mind though.

Finally on my parents 24th wedding anniversary, a warm October day, when drove out about an hour south to go look at a litter. My sister and I were bouncing up and down with joy. When we got to the house of the breeder, there were about seven tiny Golden puppies running all over the place. I was in heaven. But the hard part finally caught my attention…how do we pick just one? How do we know if it’s the right one? Will the puppy fit in with our other Golden?

My sister sat down on the floor so that she could play with the puppies. After a couple minutes, this one puppy, with an adorable pudgy belly, came over to my sister, curled up in her lap, and immediately flipped onto his back fast asleep. This puppy continued to stay put for the remainder of the time we were there. At that point, we knew we couldn't leave without him. We picked him up, took him to our car where slept nonstop the whole ride home.
