Racing the Moon

Racing the Moon

A Poem by Brenden Taylor

Moon,

why do you follow me?

No matter how much speed my tires

ante up against the asphault,

you are still beside me.

We race,

You shine through trees

and jump through hills,

I drive through rains

and swerve through lanes,

we are equal,

and you are thousands of miles

away from me.

I tried catching up,

you kept running.

I tried talking,

you kept silent,

I tried listening,

you kept your story,

I tried loving,

you kept someone else.

I don't know why you won't let go.

If you love me,

stay with me -

if you love him,

stay with him -

but make up your mind,

and stop playing games.

You can't have it both ways,

because then everyone gets hurt.

If you want to play games,

play fair - no cheating.

I'm tired of playing games.

The more I race against you,

the less I focus on the reality:

Some things are written in the stars,

but you're not a star,

and have no right to race me.
