Than my heart can go Cause I'll still be loving you Through the sadness and the madness here And I'll always be with you In the distance That has taken you From me - Taken by Plumb Sparrow awoke the next morning in an average mood, as one could say. The only problems that he was having were that his head was, as usual, throbbing, right after he lifted it up off of the ground. He sighed blankly, wishing that it would go away and that he'd have a completely happy day for once in his life. Yes... a happy day would be nice, he thought to himself, but he knew that of course that wasn't possible. He had ALMOST had a happy day yesterday, but of course Opaque and Hurricane had to mate, and of course Opaque had to hide it from him for a few hours and not expect Sparrow to go on a rampage and kill him. Maybe, Sparrow finally decided, maybe he should stop wishing for happy days. Perhaps he'd be fine with an okay-day for once in his life, and that was what he was expecting. He was going to see Sapphire again, thinking that she would probably want to know the news about Opaque becoming pregnant. This would be an ultimate shock to Sapphire, mostly because she had no clue who Hurricane was, or at least that's what Sparrow assumed. Also, Opaque just didn't seem like the type to have pups. She was seven years old, a bit older than normal pup mothers. Well, not exactly in Sunset's case, but... it's not like it mattered. Most females matured and were able to mate by the age of three years or so, but Opaque had told Sparrow before - two years ago, as a matter of fact - that the pack hadn't had much time to even socialize when Isis was driving them around trying to find him. Sparrow smirked at the thought. They had wasted all this time, trying to find him, when Sparrow could have easily done better without them. As he turned the corner to the right into Sapphire's den, he was surprised to see that she was already awake, and staring up at him with a calm look on her face. That was also unusual for Sapphire. And now, Sparrow decided that he was going to confuse her even more by telling her that Opaque was pregnant. "Hello -" Before she could finish, Sparrow interrupted Sapphire gleefully. "Wanna know a secret?" Sapphire glared at him, but nodded slowly. "Fine," she sighed, "as long as you don't interrupt me aga-" "Opaque is pregnant." Sapphire's eyes widened, but narrowed in annoyance after Sparrow interrupted her again. "Stop. Interrupting. Me -" "Nope," Sparrow cut in. "But what I'm saying is impor-" "Not really," Sapphire interrupted, rolling her eyes. "See? I interrupted you there, which you know that you deserved." "But this is important," Sparrow protested. "She's kind of pregnant!" "...With...?" "Hurricane." "...Who the hell is Hurricane?" Sparrow laughed at her response, but then became serious again after thinking for a few seconds of how he was going to explain the long and complicated love story of Opaque and Hurricane. "Um, well... let's just say... I thought he was dead." Sapphire looked unconvinced. "Come again?" "Opaque lied to me, as usual," Sparrow replied simply. "Two years ago, a bit after Isis attacked, we had this huge talk about life in her pack. She told me about this wolf named Hurricane who she had been seeing secretly, because Isis forbid anyone to stop searching for..." He swallowed. "Me. And Opaque told me that he was attacked by a grizzly bear along with her and that he was killed. That's true, but he wasn't killed." "...Oh," Sapphire replied finally. "...I see." Sparrow rolled his eyes. "That's all that you have to say?" "Well..." Sapphire coughed, pausing for a moment afterward. "...Yep." "...Anyway," Sparrow continued after a brief silence, "she told me a while ago that he was alive, and she's been seeing him... and two days ago... they mated... and... I'm still going to kill Hurricane." "I thought I heard you yelling," Sapphire admitted, a small smile popping up on her face. "Were you... trying to kill him?" "I was about to," Sparrow said. "He's been living down by the valley, I'm guessing, ever since... you know." (Author's Note: NONONONONO! No, Maddie, DON'T get writer's block! You CAN'T! Argh, d****t... I've got it. D: Starting now.) Sapphire scoffed in response. "That doesn't surprise me," she replied quietly. "Why?" "Well..." She paused, thinking for a moment. "I've heard somewhere before that the East Pack has never done very well, or succeeded, with... many things." Sparrow nodded. "That's true," he replied. "Opaque and Hurricane both told me that the East Pack has been having some problems for a while. And, according to Hurricane, he's the only one left now." Sapphire's mouth dropped open. "He's the only one? No wonder he and Opaque mated." Sparrow rolled his eyes. "Yes, but... it's weird to think about." "So..." Sapphire looked thoughtful. "Opaque just mated with him randomly?" "Yes," Sparrow said, nodding firmly. "That's what happened exactly." He rolled his eyes. "The only thing he wants to do is make sure his precious generation doesn't die out. He probably doesn't even care about Opaque..." "Sparrow," Sapphire growled, "don't say that. That would be horrible, because from what I've heard Opaque loves him a lot. That's not a very likely possibility, from how I see it." Sparrow grimaced. "There's a possibility." "Not really." She suddenly looked confused. "Well, why didn't Opaque just tell you in the first place that Hurricane was alive?" "Oh, I don't know. Maybe because she loved him?" Sparrow said sarcastically. "After Isis had attacked me, which was when she told me the whole 'Hurricane' thing, I couldn't trust anyone. Even..." He winced. "Even Opaque." Sapphire frowned. "And... you're still saying that you can't trust anyone?" Sparrow shrugged. "...Well... somewhat," he admitted quietly. "But I would have appreciated it a lot more if Opaque had just told me about Hurricane at least last year. I'm not sure I can really trust her, and that's for sure." Sapphire looked stunned. "Why?" "Sapphy, how could I not trust her?" Sparrow muttered, ignoring Sapphire's glare. "She's not as loyal to our as she seems. She's been sneaking off and seeing Hurricane for several years, first defying her mother, who has tried to kill her, and... now I'm not sure what we do about Opaque. Do you know what this means?!" "So I guess... that means we have to try to kill her!" Sapphire said brightly. Sparrow stared at her blankly, rolling his eyes several seconds later. "Anyway... my point is that Opaque knew Isis was capable of killing her. Well, she would if she figured out Opaque wasn't really looking for... me. Yet, she still disobeyed her and got away with it. Isis probably still wouldn't know if she were..." He gulped. "Alive." Sapphire narrowed her eyes. "That doesn't mean that she's -" "Um, yes it does," Sparrow interrupted sharply. "What is up with you lately? You're even more stubborn than usual. It must be because of the fi-" He trailed off, taking a deep breath. He saw Sapphire's smirk drop, and she stared at the ground. Sparrow felt terrible. "That's not what I meant..." he said shakily. "I just..." Sapphire cut him off with a sad stare as she looked up. "No," she replied quietly. "Just... I know. But I had almost forgotten about the fire, and what happened, and... you had to say that." Sparrow's eyes widened, and he shook his head. "But -" "Didn't you?" They both fell silent. Neither wanted to speak to each other, because they didn't want to start ruining each other's day because of another stupid fight. Finally, Sparrow spoke in a voice barely above a whisper. "Can we s-start another topic?" Sapphire didn't respond at first. Finally, she slowly looked up and nodded, an expression of sympathy on her face. She didn't want to make him upset again. "...Yeah. So what's on your mind lately, besides Opaque?" she responded in a lighter tone, coaxing Sparrow to forget about what had happened a matter of seconds ago. "Nothing." "That's what I thought," Sapphire muttered. "Now, tell me." "No." "Tell me!" "No!" That went on for a few more seconds, until Sparrow growled at her. "Fine," he said shortly. "Would you like a short answer, or a long one?" "...Short?" Sapphire said hopefully. Oh, here we go. Sparrow's going to rant for five and a half hours. "Everything," was his simple response. © 2012 master squigglesAuthor's Note
