All I Ever Wanted

All I Ever Wanted

A Poem by Brian M. Peeples

I trailed the treasure trove

of my abandoned memories;

where I had sung a lovely song,

and hummed a lovely hum,

and all I could think about was

where things went wrong,

...and then I realized,

it has been sixteen years

since you’ve been gone.

And you never did

say goodbye,

even though we only

knew each other,

for a very short time.

It was all I ever wanted,

you could have

at least tried.

I see loss or abandonment and a very heavy heart and yet the words are light, not harsh. Made me think....I like when words do that!
