Images of D-Day

Images of D-Day

A Poem by Phil Sanders
"

My expression of what they must have felt as the invasion started 0n 6th June 1944

"

Water lapping round the hull

In the false and silent lull
Phoney, peaceful, graceful waves
Just before the dawning day
Flash of lightning across the sky
Deadly, crackling lullaby …
Of tracer ripping through the air
Fatal metal … without care
Tears away the flimsy peace
Everyone so ill at ease
Shattering sounds of earthly hate
All a tremble … What’s our fate?
Plunging through the waves of fear
Fleeting thoughts of those so dear
Feet on terra firma now
Will I once more hold the plough?
Or will I cease to be right here …….
On the sands …. With freedom near

What a great capture of what must have been soldiers experiences...the rhythm and rhyme is perfect.
As one who simply can't write a rhyme (at least I haven't yet, and I am over 50 LOL!) I am particularly impressed by your usage of the correct words and that they RHYME. Kudos! I just recently wrote an anti-war poem, I'll send you a read request and you can take a look at it if you'd like.

This is interesting. Seems like there are two views in this - the first from views of the D Day landings and the second from how we as people stand now -

Just before the dawning day
Flash of lightning across the sky
Shattering sounds of earthly hate
All a tremble What's our fate?

These lines reminded me of the World Trade Center. I know this was far from your mind but I just picked up on a interesting link between the war past and the one that maybe looms over us.

Well thought out piece.

First congrats on a great win on saturday. You know how much it pained me to say that lol. The is a haunting piece. to me it is written possibly by someone in their early teens. Who themselves have not quite grasped the inormitity of the mission at hand. I like the way the poem builds from silently going through the waves. To the first signs of tracer fire.To a footprint on the beach with freedom near. Why did you write this peice now. was it poppys in fields was it through a book or an image whatever it is through you have captured the scene and the fear brilliantly Hats off to you....

A sad and difficult subject but you came through with a meaningful poem here to help us never forget. I like your rhyming here and the beat it keeps. Very well written.

Great job. I always like historic themes and they get no more dramatic than D-day. Hundreds of thousands of men feeling the most intense thoughts that day. 'Plunging through the waves of fear' is the best line for me.
