Backstreet

Backstreet

A Poem by Carole L

In the beginning it was

backstreet

done dark of night

with cold steel

if you’re not rich

or mad enough

 to feel

they won’t let you decide

your own life

got to take it up

the backstreet

junction

it’s less sanitary

still

they're all unclean

that’s how they got

in the mess

get the address

from Rube

get Vera’s name

and ask about

get taken up

 the backstreet

she’ll help you out

quiet though,

don’t give her up

you can know a little

but not too much

what goes on at night

in the backstreet

you cant fall asleep

just close your eyes

and clench your teeth

scrape, scrape, scrape up

 the backstreet

it’ll be over soon

and no one will know

where you’ve been

find the spot

and wipe it clean

it’s undercover now

 but see

one day

 they’ll make it

safe for all

and signs will point

 towards

the backstreet

wait for the day

when you can say

what happened in

the backstreet

then it came

they let her out

into the light

gave Vera a uniform

she's got forms to sign

they said

 tell them

it’ll be alright

still

 keep it in

the backstreets

quiet please

no one wants to know

what goes on

your safe now

secrets are safe

 here in

 the backstreet

cause nothings changed

we’re still clenching teeth

 not naming names

they say no one

 ever feels the same

after going up

 the backstreet

say it in a song

or on t.v.

but between

you and me

I don’t know anyone

who's been

up the backstreet

yeah, it has a good flow..almost feels as if it should have music..It'd make a great lyric....you could go a busking down the backstreets
