Translating Euripides "The Trojan Women"

Translating Euripides "The Trojan Women"

A Poem by cassandra violet
"

A project I'm currently working on to translate "The Trojan Women" by Euripides from its original Ancient Greek text to modern English.

"

Ἥκω λιπὼν 'ἴγαιον ἁλμυρὸν ™άθοςπόντου Ποσειδῶν, "νθα Νηρῄδων χοροὶκάλλιστον ἴχνος ἐξελίσσουσιν ποδός.

I, Poseidon, come from the salty depths of the sleek Aegean Sea, where the Nereid’s graceful gait traces a dancing ring,

ἐξ ο- γὰρ ἀμφὶ τήνδε Τρωικὴν χθόνα Φοῖ™ός τε κἀγὼ λαΐνους πύργους πέριξὀρθοῖσιν "θεμεν κανόσιν,

For since I laid this lustrous Trojan ground with stone towers and built its borders,

ο"ποτ᾽ ἐκ φρενῶνε"νοι᾽ ἀπέστη τῶν ἐμῶν Φρυγῶν πόλει:

The fondness I feel for my Phrygian city has yet to depart from within me:

νῦν καπνοῦται καὶ πρὸς Ἀργείου δορὸςὄλωλε πορθηθεῖσ᾽:

And now it is under attack and withering to ash in the fatal flames of Argive furor:

γὰρ Παρνάσιος Φωκεὺς Ἐπειός, μηχαναῖσι Παλλάδοςἐγκύμον᾽ ἵππον τευχέων ξυναρμόσας,
πύργων "πεμψεν ἐντὸς ὀλέθριον ™ρέτας:

For the Phocian Epeius crawled from his home under Parnassus, to align with Pallas and deceived the battle through the fabricated surrender of a destructive wooden horse, pregnant with hiding rivals, which was let into my walls.

Translators are so underrated and I really commend your noble foray into such an art. I think you did a great job with this, granted I don't know ancient greek, I think your modern version lays just fine with the versions I'm familiar with. Good work.
