Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(one from the archives)

"
Poppies lean towards a stream
where silver ripples gleam in sun.
A cool wind shakes their flimsy skirts
into the waters one by one.
Red sail boats launched into the deep
"We do not sleep, we do not sleep",
I hear the sound of poignant notes
as little boats are homeward bound.

"In Flanders field where poppies grow" came to my mind. Flowers falling into the stream just as soldiers fell in the field. Unfortunately, they would not make it home alive. I can picture the flowers floating....a serene scene actually. Lovely. Lydi**

I may be reading too much into this, but there is a certain sadness in this offering that makes me think of mortality. I know poppies in the UK are a symbol for war dead, and the "cool wind" might be a death symbol. "We do not sleep" may signify eternal life, and possibly we are all "little boats" homeward bound on the stream of life. As I age, these things stand out more sharply to me. Very nice effort here.

Brings to mind a poem I wrote some time ago while sitting on the bank of the River Avon watching the swans on their upstream journey home. Its as though they had done a day's work and were going home. Enjoyable piece. Thank you.

Your poem took me to the woods, Chris, a creekside rock, where I watched leaves and fallen spring blooms float downstream, wondering where they’d end up. I’ve always enjoyed the poet-guided silent journeys like this one.
