Veils

Veils

A Poem by Chris Shaw

be careful where you place your trust
like dust it falls on solemn ground
you think you’ve nurtured
friends and then
you find
that they’ve been using you

don’t let their shade
blot out your light
the sky won’t lose its summer blue
and neither will the midnight stars
hide their sparkling eyes from you

the flowers in your garden fair
they won’t turn the other way
and neither will the blackbird stop
to greet you with a song
each day

the lakes will always be a friend
the morning mists will lift and then
with clearer eyes without the tears
pick up the shards
begin again

and harbour not the shadows cast
for life’s too short for hurts to last

I have a sneaking suspicion that you are much like me when it comes to giving trust to others in giving yourself for the sake of hopefulness:/ I have nurtured the grounds of many a poor soul over the years but every now and again one of them blooms into something beautiful and makes the wasted efforts look so unimportant:) one or two of those efforts still sting me too but I try to focus on the good ones and let the burning ones shrink to a faint whisper:) well scrawled dear Chris

Haven't we all had that disappointment from a friend. Sad to say but yes even me. What can one do but live and learn.

Great read

I have Lake St. Clair near and Clinton river near me. The river and the lake. Always a kind friend. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

I did enjoy dear Chris. I always enjoy your work.
The disappointment in humanity is felt through these lines. Often times we end up putting faith and trust in those around us thinking we know them so well, and even with those who we aren't really acquainted with, because we value humanity, and to not trust others would devalue that same quality in them that hold so dear to us. Such are people who like to trust. They find it rather difficult to stop this practice, because comes so naturally and instinctively, like a zebra venturing into croc habitats to drink water, despite the risks. Being blind is not the answer either though, nor is harbouring the shadows cast by broken trust, not beyond the lessons that they teach anyways. Best regards to you. :)

So true..life's too short for hurting & living in shadows
of negativity..we can't let others bring us down either
I never treat others as bad as they are but rather treat
then as good as I am..it's always good to think positively
and this poem is a good affirmation to adhere to..
communing with nature's kind realm..never lets us down
a lovely piece here Chris..so nicely penned..

Seems like we can depend on nature more than most of our fellow two-legged creatures. I'm partial to dogs and small children, myself. They make me smile. I enjoyed the read.

We must always be careful in whom we place our trust. Friends and even family can sometimes leave us feeling betrayed. But I think it is within our power to limit those chances by the amount we allow ourselves to depend on others. Love or friendship that comes with great expectations often ends in disappointment. I like this.

To forgive, it's possible.. To forget, not so.

Trust is often misplaced, and we hurt... And hurt more when those traitors ask for it again.. And if you give it, knowing the end result already, but still giving it... It doesn't hurt as much, but becomes frustrating... When they stab that proverbial knife in the back.. Again...

It's better to keep a small circle of friends, close by, rather than giving your trust out too easily..

Cheers

Beautiful sentiment here, Chris. Indeed, it cuts like a knife when a friend breaks trust with you. However, allowing the hurt to rule your life is simply masochistic. Life IS too short to harbor the shadows...when there are sunbeams waiting to come in. I loved this one. Lydi**

Your couplet at the end really packs a poetic punch! We can't let the actions of others cast shadows on our lives. I like your idea that if people fail us we will always have a friend in nature. Even if that can be a bit challenging, but what worthwhile relationship isn't a little challenging. Good poem Chris.
