Beneath the Bark

Beneath the Bark

A Poem by T. Rhodora

The cork is that what surface in the eyes
The layered years of cambium is that what is covered
The heartwood of life’s conquest is that what lies underneath
Beneath the wrinkled furrows of life
Are the celebrated triumphs of humanity
Consider the lump of pains and sorrows endured
