Fallen Knight

Fallen Knight

A Poem by Autumn's Child
"

Seeing a knight from my past, sending him back to stay.

"

I can still smell your scent

     from our kiss hello

          and our kiss goodbye.

It’s a mixture of cologne and memories,

past lives and regrets,

all wrapped up in a summer wind.

I was brought back to a time

     when you were my hero

as I was looking for a savior.

You rode in on your fancy white horse

and told me of lands far away,

lands we would rule together.

You promised me the moon

as you laid me down in fields of thistle.

And I held onto those promises

as I said goodbye the first time

          and every time after that.

You are the same knight you were then,

     fighting your dragons

          rescuing maidens

               smiling your charm.

Thing is, you just don’t feel so gallant anymore.

I realize that it is me who has changed.

I no longer need saving.

I could never be rescued by you.

I could see in your hardened eyes

that it was you that needed the saving.

Dear friend, I am not that one,

and I’d rather leave those memories drifting away

          to that faraway land

on that white horse and summer wind they rode in on,

and let them stay there forever.

You were a lovely part of my past,

but you’d be an awful addition to my present.

To love is learning to let go at the right time, no matter how one wants to "justify" it; this makes love live on, in my mind. Your poem is lovely.
As to the grammar, I am the last to point out any; English isn't my first language, and I feel the need to improve on this level among the many other levels. Thank you for sharing this dreamy/ real write.

Interesting how things so big can change in our lives over time.
Sounds like you've grown up, that's always a good thing.
How nice to be in control of one's life.
How nice to know the difference.
