Scarlette is 14 and going through some s**t and this is just a bit of what she is going through.

Chapter 1

Scarlette picked up the knife. She put it to her wrist. She gently felt the tip of the knife on her skin. "Should I do it know, will someone find out, what will Mom do?" Scarlette burst into tears and collapsed on the bathroom floor. 1 million thoughts in her head.

You see, Scarlette was only 12 when she first started getting bullied for not having her dad around. It seems terrible that people, kids even would bully someone for a parent dying but they did. The bullying eventually stopped but the depression stayed.

Scarlette contemplated suicide almost every other day and gets low enough that she has almost cut herself multiple times.

Her mom didn't know anything, her friends alike. Scarlette didn't want them to know either.

To make an analogy: This chapter is like HTML. It'll get the job done, but it won't do more than that. You need to add some CSS in there to give it some pizzazz. I.E. Put more description in there. Here are some questions (in order of their pertinence as the story progresses) that could help give some more detail (I ask these from personal experience, knowing that there is a lot of description that you can put in your writing):

-What was it like when she was on the verge of self-harm?
-What were some of those million thoughts?
-What was the bullying like?
-What would the bullies say?
-What was the frequency, intensity, and duration of the bullying?
-When did she develop depression from the bullying? 1 month in? 1 week in? A moment in?
-What's stopping her from self-harming?
-Why doesn't Scarlette want her mom and friends to know what she's going through?
-What's stopping her from telling her mom and her friends?

These are just a few questions that could really make this piece memorable. I can infer a lot of the answers from personal experience, but everyone's experience is different. You really need to paint a picture for us more-so than you did. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so you have about 872 to go. :P
