Sunflowers Lead Me Home

Sunflowers Lead Me Home

A Poem by Marie Harrison
"

A poem about going back home.

"

SUNFLOWERS lEAD ME HOME

throwing my leather coat to the empty back seat
I'm heading out west where the sunflowers grow tall on
the sides of the road and the sun anoints my shoulders

out to the land of surf and boogie boards
out west where my uncle will be laid to rest on hurricane hill
who knows what sandstar I'll find along the shoreline
who can tell when the fog will drift off San Fernando Valley

with the wind in my hair and my sunglasses on
I'm leaving the world behind with my my radio up and my memory off
my cares fall on how many miles are left that lie between me
and my west coast family

life's been kind to me since I last left the Valley
many tears have been shed too
that's what happens when you grow-up
and leave the Valley

excellent tribute...radio up and memory off...is a memorable line...you seem to write with such ease...though...i know this is not always the case...the images evoke all that is radiant in a day...enjoyed this write immensely and will read more of your work on my next reading sweep...

I think this one of your best pieces , a poetic heartfelt tribute to him

You journey us all back to that place of freedom on the West Coast.. the beauty of sunflowers and the wildness of the waves and boogie boards.. Sweet shared memories in honor of your dear uncle. Your imagery is filled with sunlight.

I really love this piece.. the simplicity is beautiful, the imagery vivid. I love the emotion behind it and the last line. I especially loved,
"I'm leaving the world behind with my my radio up and my memory off
my cares fall on how many miles are left that lie between me"
Wonderful piece. Great job.
