Fade To Black

Fade To Black

A Poem by Marie Harrison
"

A poem about domestic violence.

Fade To Black

Someone’s slapping,

Punching and hitting

Me all over my body,

My legs, my stomach,

My arms and my butt.

Salty tears are

Running down

My cheeks but

I’m not crying.

I’m screaming

Instead.

Their nails are scratching

And clawing me all over

My face, my arms and legs,

But I can’t feel a thing

Because I’m numb all over.

I have no feeling at all!

My heart is racing

And the sounds of

Voices yelling in

My ears are muffled

And fading.

My ears are hot

And burning.

Someone’s rapping

On my head with

A sharp high

Heel shoe,

But I’m not

Letting them in.

It’s as if I’m

Watching this

From a plush

Theatre seat

Up above

Minus the

Popcorn and soda.

Someone that

Looks like me

Is getting a

Severe beating

Down below by

Those she loves

The most.

Poor thing.

Oh I wish

There was

Something I

Could do

For her.

But I’ve got

No ideas,

She’s trapped

In this lifestyle.

Fade to black.

Awful that this sort of thing goes on. My friend lost his sister to abuse when her husband murdered her one month shy of their divorce. He just couldn't leave her along. She did everything right to but it didn't save her. This is a really excellent poem about abuse.

The intensity of this one is amazing........I was very much drawn in to reading this. You have a way of grabbing the reader and not letting them go.....

Colors fade over time, but black doesn't...Makes you wonder. I like this a lot it says a lot nicely done and even more nicely written!

this is a raw and hard hitting portrayal of domestic violence..I agree that the victim often detaches themselves from the situation.well done

it's an interesting take on domestic violence... disassociating from the abuse, watching like a play... great idea, makes it more powerful. the last line is the best and it's got such a punch that it could really be a stanza of it's own, maybe separated from the rest... great poem, thank you for sharing.

This poem stirred up some things inside...we would all rather refuse to admit
exists. It has to make us all want to change things.

The raw nature of your words really brings the nature of abuse to life... I like that you told it straight forward, no sugar coating.

Domestic violence, verbal or emotional is inexcuseable. The one we most trust is the one we are most vulnerable to. Unfortunately those who are abused tend to make excuses for their abusesers for far too long, sometimes until they die. Sad sad situation.
