You think you know me?

You think you know me?

A Poem by Chong N. Kim

You think you know me?

You’re afraid to approach me,

You assume I’m a high maintenance girl.

You watch me from afar,

Just for those moments,

You think you know me.

Take my hand,

And I’ll take you on a journey ride

You’ll be amazed and yet

Filled with surprise.

My heart has been,

In places only people heard about.

The color of my skin

Only describes

My ethnic background.

So, don’t assume you

Know who I am.

You may think you know me,

By the articles you read.

You may think you got me,

From the lyrics of my poem.

You may assume I am your best friend

Because you only said

Hello, to me once?

You stand by side me,

Coughing a joke

About a homeless bum,

And yet you have no idea

Where I have been?

You laugh at someone

You hardly know,

Someone who’s sick,

Because of a drug addiction,

But didn’t realize

By standing next to me,

I’m a recovering addict?

You see my long black hair

And my fair soft skin,

The almond shaped eyes,

That resemble,

The art of a Geisha.

Submissive and petite,

Is something

That hardly fits for me.

I am loud,

And I will speak.

Words will chant,

That makes the haters cringe.

The things I have,

are symbols of my

strength before.

So, let me ask you again

Do you really know me?
