When You Had Only Smiles

When You Had Only Smiles

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

There was a time

The man told his daughter

When I used to hold your hand

And it would be

Right

Down

Here.

And I would walk with you

And all the old Chinese men

Would nod in greeting as we passed

And they would say

Hello Claire!

With a smile

Did you know that man?

I would ask

And you would smile

Because back then was

When you had

Only smiles.

There was a time

The man told his daughter

When your hair was the colour

Of the winter sun

A cool pale

Yellow

And all the Chinese women would

Stroke your hair and call you

Wawa

Meaning doll

Because your skin was as pale

As porcelain

Isn’t she sweet?

They would say

And you would smile

Because back then was

When you had

Only smiles.

There was a time

The man told his daughter

When you had only smiles

What Happened?
