An Undying Thirst

An Undying Thirst

A Poem by Tabetha Green
"

It's about the craving for power and how it eventually comes to destroy a human being.

"
Fires in fury raging away
Embers rising with sparks afloat
crackling and popping
they crave for your soul

In the devil's red, angels from hell
take over with a warm embrace
singing and prancing
never to leave you in peace

Eating away into the life
the hungry demons shred all apart
ripping and tearing
what was once your heart

The throat dries, the thirst grows,
the blood freezes in its place
coughing and choking
you fight in vain, for a life that once was

To surrender is to be cursed
To keep trying is to be a fool
crawling and stumbling
we choose a poison

Many a fool burns to death
the old days flashing before his eyes; he goes
writhing and screaming
still after the curse, still after the blessing

A rare fool does stumble on the prize
his life's worth of gold
shimmering and glittering
A fair exchange for his soul

I like the direction shift toward the end. The last two stanzas were my favorite because they ring so true. Our own destruction burns away from inside more than outside, but no one even realizes it. Good job.
