Addictions

Addictions

A Poem by Curtis Shannon
"

For a friend. One who is now gone.

"
a hard life set before you
concrete and ready to start
but did you choose this life?
not that I will say so

substances, substances, substances
addiction, addiction, addiction
lying, cheating, backstabbing
hurting the ones you love

 but who is to blame?
who to blame for such strife?
is it your fault?
not that I will say so

you promised to stop
you decided to stop
you said you'd stop
oh! why didn't you stop?

and now so far from me
in the a world that I am not in
they found your body lying
in the dirt, eyes cold, dim

a hard life set behind you
it's all over now
soon to be forgotten
soon to fade away

you wanted to stop
you tried to stop
I helped you stop
is it too late to stop?

this is so sad, and as friends we deal with this...feeling there must be something we could do to help our friends in these situations, but the bottom line is that they must want to help themselves...it has to start there....and if they don't...eventually all those left behind suffer tremendously...
a really moving and poignant write.
