The Saddest Thing

The Saddest Thing

A Poem by Christopher Bishop
"

A poem about sadness.

"

The saddest thing in the world is a word

Which can never be what it claims

Though it may shoot to define what there is

It always falls short of its aims

Sadder still is the person behind

Who thinks that their label is true

They live in a world that is only as real

As the thought which compels them they do

Sad is a feeling that can only be felt

The word is a meaningless face

The word and the person are one and the same

The truth is ineffable grace

I really liked this. I read it a couple of times and it definitely made me stop and think. Particularly I really liked the last stanza. I thought it beautifully Described the reason why "sadness" is so difficult to actually figure out and cope with.
