Father

Father

A Poem by danalyn

Its not something
That disappears,
Not completely
That such feelings could fall under
The false pretenses of reconciliation,
Is a lie.

In the name of peace and
Resolving tension
Such strong feelings of
Disappointment and shame
Never run out, never entirely

I know that. You know that
The silence that stretches between us
Beyond a small embrace and apology
Because these feelings never disappear.

They are scorched upon the skin, upon the night sky
And if you should forget, or have even already forgotten
It would remain in my cloudy memory
The way such vitriol coated your lips
The volume reaching to such heights I was afraid of anyone else
Seeing my failure

It never disappears, it lives on
Creating another unspoken fissure
That we jump over and over again
Reminded of it, of this little shattered thing,
Forever.

Words can hurt, sometimes long after they are spoken. This testimony from a victim of such verbal abuse is testimony to that.
