Exit 38

Exit 38

A Poem by Dana Spicer

Under the sand lies a life that she once led

That she knows she can never live again

With the New Jersey Shore summer times

As hot as they were fun

And the parkway traffic twinkling in the sun

‘Cause life was short and it was endless

All at once

What lay ahead of her

She didn’t need to think

The future was a Rob Zemeckis flick

With hover boards and see-through ties

And flying DeLoreans

And dashing men who’d love her for her brains

Her confidence grew mighty

She clenched it like a fist

‘Til it left with the first boy that she kissed

Fumbling in Camaro seats

Her reckless love was real

While Chris Carrabba told her how to feel

‘Cause life was short and it was endless

All at once

She lived a thousand years

‘Fore she turned twenty-two

She’d live a thousand more ‘fore she was through

Until the day her prowess failed

And a thousand turned to none

She barely felt the head on collision

Under the sand lies a life that she once led

That she knows she can never live again

With the New Jersey Shore summer times

She loved when she was young

And the parkway traffic twinkles in the sun

‘Cause life is short and it’s endless

All at once

I loved this! The repetition was perfect. These lines were wonderful:

'Cause life was short and it was endless
All at once

I also loved these:
Under the sand lies a life that she once led
That she knows she can never live again

These are powerful lines in my opinion. You have a very strong and distinctive voice. I look forward to reading more from you. Keep on writing and sharing.

Wow, Dana. That's all I can say. Wow. Actually, I would like to say a little more. I love the line:

"'Cause life is short and it's endless/all at once"

I've pondered over that same thing many times before. Also, the second to last stanza (the one about the thousand years) is amazing.

Thanks for the great work and I hope to see more of your stuff in the future.
