The Slaying Of The Serpent Of Morraine

The Slaying Of The Serpent Of Morraine

A Poem by David Carter
"

A dragon slaying epic poem

"

Deep in blackened mountains
When chivalry held reign
A lonely knight came riding
T’wards the caverns of Morraine
Hooves plodding without echo
Into Satan’s Dark Domain

Belligerent advancing
The Demon den’s in sight
To slay the Black Behemoth
Is the purpose of the knight
A pure and godly mission
Which must end on this tonight

Like from a bird, a shriek is heard
That turns the blood to ice
A massive wingèd creature
Has the region in a vise
The warrior knows for certain
That no weapons will suffice

The glowing molten vapor
Emitted by the Beast
Reflects off piles of armor
Of the one’s who’ve made his feast
He’s conquered many warriors
From the greatest to the least

Invincible he claims to be
And none have proved him wrong
His ugly face is smug with pride
As he sings his devilsong
And eye admires with inner fire
His treasure all day long

The knight dismounts and creeps about
‘Til Leviathan’s in view
And sits and waits, stern of face
For the hour to be true
A glimmer in the darkness
Is all that carries through

The Serpent smells the horse’s breath
And pounces on its back
The helpless creature screams in pain
Its vision fades to black
The knight stands tall and knows that now’s
The time for the attack

The Devil turns to see his foe
A grin breaks through the gore
He spreads his wings on either side
And swift begins to soar
He’s quick ascending vertically
Ever more and more

The Monster gruesome roars with joy
At the pleasure of the feeling
Of horses’ flesh upon his lips
Still warm with blood congealing
His bloodlust now has been aroused
He won’t be soon repealing

The knight with courage now infused
Holds up a hand on high
The dragon’s coming swiftly now
The final battle’s nigh
With heartbeat racing, strong and quick
Yells out a battle cry

And as the darkest hour dawns
Knight’s helmet is removed
A beautiful woman is revealed
And judgment swiftly proved
For Evil’s slain by Love’s sweet fire
By beauty’s been removed

The shards of flaming dragon glow
They’ve burst into bouquet
The fiery flowers glimmer
In this sweet and joyous day
For the sun has come at longest last
To sweep dark night away

Whoa, David! When did you write this? What a fine instinct you have for expression, story telling and rhythm! I hope to see more of your work, and to watch how you mature.

And, just because I see 'em, I'm gonna call 'em. Typos:
"on this tonight" huh? "on this night"
one's--possessive singular, and you keep the apostrophe. Plural subject and you drop it.
I was going to say something about the spelling of gruesome, but I'll have to check a dictionary first. It could be you're right!

I've loved your writing ever since I read the piece about whales you wrote when you were 7. They swam around eating fish and ships. I don't know if that was a deliberate pun, or something that came more intuitively, but I loved it. Put some more of your work up here.

This poem actually reminds me slightly of "The Hoard" although I am not completely sure why. Just a couple of lines are like that actually. I really enjoyed it though. You are very imaginative and you have a good feel for rhythm. Keep writing and put more stuff on here!

This poem definately had excellent imagery and I loved the story that it told. It needs a teeny bit of tweaking for grammatical purposes to make it perfect but other than that it was superb, excellent work! I loved this poem! :D
